Tuesday Trivia: Now with really stupid theme!

There’s a theme here, but it may be kind of obscure. You can get the movies without the theme.

1. Throwing spaghetti against the wall is still the best way to test if it’s done.
Solved by Ken (comment #10).

2. “I’ll meet you at the place near the thing where we went that time.”
Solved by Evn (comment #4).

3. She drops her wedding ring down the shower drain.
Solved by Trevor J (comment #12).

4. Production of this movie hit the gossip columns when the single male star and the married female star had an on-set affair. As a result, a sex scene between the two was cut and has never seen the light of day. Instead, the male star (who plays a single character) and the female star (who plays a married character) have one passionate kiss at the end, before she is reunited with her husband. In real life, the actress’s marriage did not fare as well.
Solved by maurinsky (comment #2) and Trevor J (comment #3) at the same time.

5. “We didn’t say lose weight. I might say tighten.”
Solved by Trevor J (comment #3).

6. “Freud didn’t know dick about women.”
Solved by Antony Cartouche (comment #6).

7. No one can remember eating breakfast.
Hint: Science fiction of the 1990s.

  1. maurinsky says:

#2 is When Harry Met Sally

  2. maurinsky says:

#4 – is this Proof of Life?

    Is Meg Ryan the theme?

  3. Trevor J says:

    #4 Proof of Life

    #5 Knocked Up

  4. Evn says:

I think #2 is Broadcast News.

  5. deblipp says:

Maurinsky, you got #2 and the theme wrong, #4 right.

  6. #1 is The Apartment . . . ?

#6 is The Object of My Affection

  7. Melville says:

    Two sort-of answers/guesses:

Hackers has a line almost like #2. Is that it?

Walter Matthau throws the spaghetti against the wall in The Odd Couple. Is that what you’re thinking of?

  8. Tom Hilton says:

Ocean’s Eleven has a line similar to #2, but it’s not quite the same.

  9. Roberta says:

WTF this just showed up for me at 11:40.

  10. Ken says:

    #1 – The Big Chill

  11. Ken says:

#2 is gangsters talking on the tapped phone. I want to say The Gang That Couldn’t Shoot Straight, except I don’t think that’s it, although it fits the “gangster comedy” genre.

  12. Trevor J says:

    #3 is Apollo 13

  13. deblipp says:

Okay, all the updates have been added; only #7 is left, many people were wrong and many were right, and Roberta, sorry about your WTF.

  14. Evn says:

Is the theme some kind of take on “Our love can never be”?

  15. deblipp says:

The theme is stupid, and has to do with actors. No one will ever guess. However, #7 is a really damn fine movie.

  16. Melville says:

The only theme I can come up with is that each movie has a performer who had his or her first success on a T.V. series (?)

  17. deblipp says:

Melville, I’m giving it to you. Every movie either has a star who is now on TV (Broadcast News’s Holly Hunter on Saving Grace; The Big Chill’s Glenn Close on Damages), or the opposite; a TV star moved into film (Jennifer Aniston from Friends into The Object of My Affection).

  18. Evn says:

That’s a cool theme! Not stupid at all. Subtle, but not stupid.

  19. Tom Hilton says:

I know I solved #7 this morning, while I was having breakfast. If only I could remember having breakfast…

  20. Daven says:

Number 7, Space Cowboys? It would fit with the theme.

  21. Daven says:

Belay the previous. Just looked it up. Space Cowboys is from 2000. Although it would be perfect since both Clint Eastwood AND James Garner got their starts and had very successful careers on TV then went on to become good and prolific stars on the Silver Screen.

  22. Evn says:

    Breakfast of Champions?

  23. deblipp says:

Neither Space Cowboys nor Breakfast of Champions. I thought of including James Garner, but I couldn’t come up with a really fun example.

  24. Tom Hilton says:

It isn’t Dark City, is it? I know you love that movie, and people forget all kinds of stuff, but I don’t recall breakfast amnesia specifically.

  25. deblipp says:

Nice, using your knowledge of my favorite movies. Yes, that’s the answer. No one in Dark City can remember what they did during daylight, and breakfast is specifically mentioned.

The TV crossover star is Keifer Sutherland.

  26. Tom Hilton says:

It was actually the movie that first came to mind when I read the clue, but I just couldn’t be sure enough; the hint is what made me a little more certain. Still can’t recall the mention of breakfast, but then I’ve only seen it once.

  27. deblipp says:

I’ve seen it, I think, 3 times. It’s funny though, some little moment or comment will stick in my mind from a film for years and years, but I’ll completely forget major scenes or even the plot.
