Oscar Nominations are here

Well, there may not be an Oscars ceremony, but the nominations are in. And my score sucks.

Best Picture: I’ve seen NONE! None I say! (Atonement, Juno, Michael Clayton, No Country for Old Men, There Will Be Blood). I really do want to see all of them.

Best Actor: I’ve seen two (Viggo in Eastern Promises, Depp in Sweeney Todd) and I intend to see one or two more (not Valley of Elah, thanks).

Best Actress: I’ve seen one (Julie Christie, Away From Her). I intend to see two more.

I could go on but it remains about that pathetic.

I’ve seen Sweeney Todd. That’s it.

I’ve seen Sweeney Todd, Eastern Promises, and Away From Her.

I’ve seen Atonement and Juno. I liked Juno.

    Didn’t like Atonement?

  5. Amy says:

    Why not Valley of Elah?

  6. deblipp says:

Because it seems like it’ll be sad and painful and disturbing and I’m not up for it. Fine for a Coen brothers movie, fine for a turn-of-the-century oil movie, but not about Iraq and today, too real.

I thought Atonement was beautifully filmed and well acted, but I felt like it was the first act of one movie, half the second act of another, then back to the finale of the first movie.

I saw Sweeney Todd. It was pretty good. I saw No Country for Old Men, and just didn’t get it and have absolutly no clue why it has been nominated.

  9. deblipp says:

That’s interesting, Barbs, because I thought you were a Coen brothers fan.

I am a fan!! I usually love their movies. People are saying it is better than Fargo. Not so much, I like the Coens for black comedy, this was just black.

  11. Melville says:

Pay cable has made me horribly lazy about going to theaters. I’ve gotten into the habit of thinking “Eh, I’ll just wait til it gets to HBO.” But I did see There Will Be Blood. It’s tremendous, and Lewis is beyond great. I’ve also seen I’m Not There, which I also loved. Cate Blanchett is uncanny as mid-sixties Dylan, but now I want to see it again to savor Heath Ledger’s performance more. 🙁

Netflix has done the same thing to me, Melville…. but we recently joined a local non-profit theater which shows the good stuff (http:\\www.amblertheater.org) and we get half price tickets and there’s a great Irish pub across the street…. so we’ve been going “out to the movies” a lot more lately. I think we’ll be seeing “Blood” this weekend.

I joined Netflix specifically to see new movies. I’ve been seeing either in the theater or on TCM, so either very current or forty years old. I don’t have pay cable. Away From Her and Eastern Promises were both Netflix movies, but NO WAY will DVDs for the best pic nominees be released until after the awards buzz has been milked for more theater ticket sales.

  14. Tom Hilton says:

I’ve seen one No Country for Old Men, which is one more than I’ve seen in most Oscar years. I loved it, by the way.

Out of the major nominees, I have seen Atonement, The Diving Bell and the Butterfly, Sweeney Todd, I’m Not There, and La Vie en Rose. I recommend all of them very highly.

Heath ledger is one of the Bob Dylans in I’m Not There.
