Another Oscar update

My score keeps climbing. Saw The Devil Wears Prada tonight, which was so not worth it, but it did up my numbers to 5/15 major nominations, 8/45 nominations for all full-length films.

Gotta say, it’s a crime that Streep can be nominated for that, in the same year she did Prairie Home Companion. I mean, wonderful in both, but still.

I liked watching all the costume changes (but then I don’t live in this environment in almost any way, beyond the one pointed out in such a brutally condescending way by Streep with regards to the cerulean cotton/poly sweater). Nonetheless, I found the movie enjoyable, but not overwhelming in the slightest. I would rate it an acceptable date movie, and nothing further.

As I’ve said in a couple of comment threads, I would be disappointed if she wins for this performance. I thought Mirren’s was at least as good, and Mirren has never won. I also thought Judi Dench’s was at least as good (frankly, of the ones I’ve seen it’s my favorite even though I’m rooting for Mirren).

I loved Streep’s performance, but it was terrific fun, not earth shattering.

Streep was terrific, and I’m glad she had that one emotional scene, but you’re right, it’s not the bee’s knees or anything, and if she must get a nomination this year it should have been for Prairie Home.
