Archeological Evidence for the Ramayana

Here’s an interesting story sent to me by my friend Barbara:

NASA Images Discover Ancient Bridge between India and Sri Lanka
Space images taken by NASA reveal a mysterious ancient bridge in the Palk Strait between India and Sri Lanka. The recently discovered bridge currently named as Adam’s Bridge is made of chain of shoals, c.18 mi (30 km) long. The bridge’s unique curvature and composition by age reveals that it is man made. The legends as well as Archeological studies reveal that the first signs of human inhabitants in Sri Lanka date back to the a primitive age, about 1,750,000 years ago and the bridge’s age is also almost equivalent.

In [the Ramayana], there is a mentioning about a bridge, which was built between Rameshwaram (India) and Srilankan coast under the supervision of a dynamic and invincible figure called Rama who is supposed to be the incarnation of the supreme.

I find this incomparably cool. For Hindus, this is the equivalent of discovering archeological evidence of Noah’s ark or of the parting of the Red Sea.

When I read a translation of the Ramayana, the story of building a bridge to Sri Lanka really struck me. I wondered if it might be based on history, but it seemed so implausible. I mean, 18 miles long! Yet there it is.

Archelogists are now beginning to listen to myth when looking at sites. For years they poo-pooed the myth of the Easter Island statues “walking” to thier places on the hillsides. After much experimention, it was demonstrated that they would get the stones upright, tie them with ropes and literlly move them like big refigerators into place. It must have been stunning to see them walking to thier spot.

Incredible pics….. Now somebody needs to get some from closer down, and then ground level…. Fascinating!

It’s so amazing. Barbs, I didn’t know that about Easter Island, you’re right, I’d have loved to see that!

This is indeed cool! But it can’t be real, because we all know the world was created in 4004 BC and any evidence to the contrary was placed here by Satan to deceive us. 😉

what do mean world was created in 4004 B.C???…if someone writes a false history…u wanna remain blindfolded and maintain status quo…then what;s the point in reading this article….u could have ignored it??…this is surely an insight, if further investigated, could even re-write the claim that the most ancient civilisations were egypt, mesops, greek etc…….this might further prove the fact that so-called a third world country today,….indeed pioneered civilisations which incorporated superior technology, power just to follow righteousness…while men in other parts where no more than ape- variants…….

I’m not sure I follow you, raghu. I never said the world was created in 4004 BCE. The point of linking to the article is to read about the very interesting archeological evidence, not to decide when the world was created.

hey i am not telling u deblipp…that was in response to Kathy….hey no offence meant……

hey don;t mistake me deblipp…infact i appreciate you to have created awarness among few of ur friends about this…’word of mouth’ is more powerful than any form of communication…..i belive this…but what hurts me is …no one, especially many western archeologists, were game to explore many indian findings, probably fearing that it might force them to re-write the history… at the same time, there are pragmatic and open minded people like you, who share these facts with others, which might persuade many to investigate these matters further, atleast not ignore them…if you have time you could read this article too—a 9,500 indian submerged city discovered…..this is equally interesting…(http://www.sullivan-county.com/id3/9500_city.htm)

raghu, Kathy was making a joke at the expense of “Creationists.”

There is very little knowledge of Indian scripture or history in the West. I don’t know if it’s what you say, or just ethnocentrism.

  10. raghu says:

hey hey,…..no ethnocentrism…infact i’ve been traveling across the world…and i have experienced enough to believe that every culture has something to offer…,.okay i got ur point….what i meant was very little knowledge of indian history in the west ……..and also an interest of western arch to investigate further into historical findings like these….
